The fluvial procession or Karakol was held last July 6, 2024 as part of the 100 days celebration towards the 400th Year Celebration of Evangelization of Kawit, Cavite (Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Mary Magdalene on July 22, 2024).

Karakol, a form of thanksgiving prayer done in dance in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene, patroness of Kawit. It is also performed during the Feast of the Santo Nino, every last Sunday of January and other key events.

1600 was the year Cavite Viejo, now Kawit, was established according to Agustin Cavada , author of Historia geográfica: geológica y estadiśtica de Filipinas. Considering Cavite Viejo (Kawit) as the Mother Town or Old Town, towns that are formerly part of Cavite Viejo like Noveleta (Tierra Alta), Imus, and General Trias, naturally inherited various cultural traditions including the Karakol.

It was in 1615, that Archbishop of Manila Garcia Serrano placed Kawit under the Jesuits. It was the same year the Jesuits opened a temporary church dedicated to the Nuestra Seῆora de Loreto and a mission house in Cavite Puerto where the Jesuit ministering both Cavite el Viejo (Kawit) and Binakayan resided. The traditions in Kawit revolve around the veneration of the patroness Saint Mary Magdalene. The patroness has become an important symbol of unity because of the miracles attributed to her not only during the Spanish era or the Philippine Revolution but today as well.

The most significant miracle, townsfolks believe, is the blessings the town receive when the image of the patroness is brought around Kawit through a procession-dance tradition called Karakol. It is described as a dance movement performed collectively to convey gratitude or pray for special intentions.
