A detailed look at the exterior, light setup and interior of a Volkswagen Crafter/ Ambulanz Mobile ambulance for St John Ambulance in New Zealand. More about the light setup and the new livery below 🔽

NEW GRAPHICS

St John recently changed their graphics package to the beautiful new Māori design which connects ambulance graphics with native New Zealand culture. The look of the ambulances now represents the community they serve. 🙂

LIGHTS & SIRENS

This unit is equipped with the following Whelen lights on the lower half of the vehicle:
- 2 ION behind the windshield
- 4 ION-T in the grille
- license plate mount with 2 ION
- 2 ION-V at the sides below the headlights
- 2 ION-T facing sideways at the rear
- 2 Mini ION-T at the rear
The upper integrated lights are AmbulanzMobile's standard lights. These lights look like Whelen Legacy modules but those are just copies from Hansch. The sirens on this unit are toy sirens from Hänsch as well, coming from 2 70W siren speakers.

Unfortunately this unit does not have a Whelen Core light & siren control system (that allows complete customization & programming of the lights & sirens) despite the fact that most St John NZ Ambulance vehicles have standardized all Whelen & Core packages on around 300 - 400 vehicles since around 2019 as far as I've seen. This was something that made St John NZ stick out a lot to me from all the images and videos that I saw on numerous platforms and by writing with several EMS workers from New Zealand.

AmbulanzMobile still attempted to incorporate a few features. The scene pattern is one example, although the top lights are not synced and cannot be synchronized to the Whelen lights. The short flashes & long off-phase of the top lights makes no sense from a scientific point of view. Especially at night, the human eye needs a fixed point of light or slowly flashing lights in order to properly estimate the distance to and precise location of an object. The side facing running-type pattern makes the light source appear to move and can easily be confused with Traffic Advisors.
