Normocytic Anemia
Normocytic anemia is a type of anemia characterized by a normal mean corpuscular volume (MCV), reflecting the size of red blood cells. This condition can result from various underlying etiologies, including chronic diseases, acute blood loss, hemolysis, and bone marrow disorders. 💉 Chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, chronic inflammation, and malignancies can lead to impaired erythropoiesis or increased red blood cell destruction, contributing to normocytic anemia. Acute blood loss, either from trauma or gastrointestinal bleeding, can rapidly decrease red blood cell volume, leading to normocytic anemia. Hemolytic disorders, such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia and hereditary spherocytosis, can also result in normocytic anemia due to increased red blood cell destruction. Diagnosis involves comprehensive evaluation, including complete blood count (CBC), peripheral blood smear examination, reticulocyte count, and assessment of underlying conditions. Treatment strategies focus on addressing the underlying cause, such as managing chronic diseases, controlling bleeding, or providing supportive care for hemolytic disorders.
