In 1955 a young Shirley MacLaine was a star on the rise. In 1954 she was the understudy for star Carol Haney in the Broadway show, The Pajama Game. In keeping with Hollywood mythology, MacLaine stepped in for the injured star for a few weeks and was spotted by Hollywood producer Hal B. Wallace and was given a contract with Paramount Pictures.

In 1955, MacLaine first appeared in the Alfred Hitchcock picture, The Trouble with Harry. Her performance for Hitchcock won her recognition won her the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actress that year. She also appeared in 1955 with box office champions, Martin and Lewis, in Artists and Models. Demonstrating her status as an up-and-coming star, MacLaine appeared on the 1955 Easter Seals Teleparade of Stars on April 2, 1955.
