The word 'Khabees' in Urdu
The word 'Khabees' in Urdu means 'filthy' or 'impure'. The poem is about these tags that headstrong women earn in our society. It says that if being my own person makes me impure, then that is what I shall be.
It's about the expectations from women, from that of putting on a chadar, to that of smiling more. It's about the compartmentalisation of women into the binaries of 'prude' and 'slut', either consciously or otherwise. It's about the unfair sacrifices that are expected of us, but ones we shall no more deliver.
