In this week’s video for ‘Now We Know’, we will discuss what happens to forest waste, the role of the nutrients in this process, and how microorganisms are regulating it.
In the forest, majestic trees all grow from but one thing soil. When you think about it, the soil is the major growth booster for these trees. The soil contains multiple beneficial substances like Carbon, Nitrogen, Magnesium, etc. These substances help the soil gain structure and fertility, improve its water holding capacity, help the soil air itself out and also help trees photosynthesize. Another thing that the soil is rich in is microorganisms. One tablespoon of soil contains more microorganisms than there are people on Earth! These are organisms that you cannot find if you look at the soil with your naked eye but they are there, performing a very important task: decomposition. When a tree sheds its leaf, it falls on this soil. When the soil senses any dead matter in itself, the microorganisms get to work. They slowly eat up whatever dead matter is in contact with the soil and convert it into a simpler form. Because of this, the dead matter starts decaying. This is called decomposition. While decomposition, the dead leaves get converted to a dark substance called humus. And humus can easily be absorbed by plants since it contains all the good things we spoke about earlier, namely, Carbon, Nitrogen, Magnesium, etc. This makes the soil rich for a new seed to fall on the ground and start growing up into these tall trees! And then, the tree will shed its leaves again which will get decomposed too. This is also the reason that forests do not accumulate any waste at all!
