This video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to salvage your existing stairs by installing short treated post legs beneath the stair stringers! Tools: Circular Saw Drill or Impact Driver Tape Measure Pencil Pry Bar Materials: 4x4 Treated Lumber 2-1/2" screws or nails How To: 1) Get stairs lifted slightly off the ground and make sure rot is not to extensive in bottom step by pulling off kickplates or treads. (If rot IS very bad, you may have to build an independent bottom step, and ALSO carry out this repair for the upper portion. 2) Cut short post lengths that can fit below the second-to-last stair. 3) Position the post piece behind stringer where you want it to sit and scribe a line on the post along the underside of the stringer. 4)Cut out this angled notch -- called a "cheek" cut, or "shoulder" cut -- using a circular saw. 5)Set post in place beneath stringer, and attach to backside of stringer using nails or screws. 6)Repeat for other stringers.
