No, you do not need prior research experience, but it is highly recommended to have research experience.

In polling the R3ciprocity Community, I asked the question “Prior to applying to PhD Programs, did you have research experience at a University?”

63% said they had research experience (n=27).  37% had no research experience.

Why do people have research experience before joining a PhD program?

Selection. If you have been exposed to research experience, you are more likely to choose jobs that are research oriented.
Requirement. Some PhD programs will outright require you to have research experience.

However, in many doctoral programs, it does not make sense to have the research experience requirement. For example, if you are a PhD in Management or a PhD in Finance, you likely are going to have gone through the MBA route, and it is just not common to have research experience.

Does having research experience help you get into a PhD Program? Absolutely. You are much more likely to be taken seriously as a PhD candidate if you have research experience.

What Counts As research experience?

If you worked in a lab, wrote an in depth paper, or wrote a research report, this will likely count as research experience. Basically, most people are looking at whether you did a large project that was difficult to perform. The more that the project was your own idea, the better.

Here is the real reason why you may want research experience before joining a PhD Program?

The real reason is that you have little understanding of what is involved in the PhD journey until you actually do research. There are many things that you have to learn about yourself and what research is like before you begin. Doing research for 4 months is one thing, but doing research for your life is another.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
