Consciousness - A biological explanation
Early on, Dr. Viswanathan introduces the 'hard problem of consciousness' - "the question of how physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective experience" (Chalmers ). Purported 'crazy' solutions to this problem such as panpsychism , " Scientific version of panpsychism" ( Integrated information theory by Tononi) and ORCH- OR theory are mentioned.It is explained that theories like these are magical in two ways: How awareness emerges from the brain is unexplained . How awareness controls brain also remains unexplained in these theories. The Attention schema theory (AST) of consciousness , which proposes that awareness is a description puts an end to this double magic. AST proposes that awareness is composed of information. "Awareness" is is a bundle of information that depicts the picture/schematic model of a process in the brain known as "Attention". Attention in turn, is "an enhancement operation and a selection operation performed on signals in the brain". Two areas in brain, TPJ and STS , active in social cognition are suggested to be the areas involved in computing this information. These areas are also involved in attributing consciousness to other people (and even to objects that in reality have no brain- like a ventriloquist's puppet) . Our brains can attribute consciousness to ourselves or to others-all consciousness is an attribution.
