The recipients of the National Medal of Arts include singer and musician Alison Krauss, actor Jon Voight, the Musicians of the United States Military, and Sharon Percy Rockefeller, the chairman of the board of trustees for the National Gallery of Art, The recipients of the National Humanities Medal include author James Patterson, Patrick O'Connell, the chef and proprietor of the Inn at Little Washington, as well as Teresa Lozano Long, a philanthropist and patron of the arts and eduction, and The Claremont Institute, a conservative think tank in California. "Great nations produce great thinkers, artists, musicians and scholars who make our world a more beautiful, enlightened and joyful place," the president said. "Each of today's recipients has made outstanding contributions to American society, culture and life." In a light moment, the music from the film, "Midnight Cowboy" began playing during the president's remarks, and actor Jon Voight, who starred in the film rose from his chair and performed a brief sashay on stage, then struck a pose as he sat down. Voight starred in the film along with Dustin Hoffman, and it won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. "What a great movie," the president said.
