In this 4K video I answer the question, what is a guitalele?
Thanks to KoAloha Ukuleles I'll be able to walk you through this amazing instrument.
Essentially a guitalele (or what I like to say, guitarlele) is an ukulele with 6 strings.
If standard soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone ukuleles have 4 strings, what 2 strings does a guitalele add? The guitalele adds 2 low or bass strings.
The first 4 strings of a guitarlele (strings 1-4) are identical to the soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles. First string is A, second string is E, third string is C, and fourth string is G.
Notice that the fourth string of the guitarlele will always be a low G.
The guitarlele then adds a 5th string which is D and a 6th string which is A.
The benefit of adding 2 extra strings, especially low strings is that it extends the range of the instrument while supplying more bass.
The guitalele does have a wider neck compared to a tenor ukulele to accommodate the 2 extra strings.
The guitarlele that I'm playing is on a tenor ukulele body, which I think is pretty common.
If your guitar player then playing a guitarlele should be simple.
You can use the same chord shapes that you play on the guitar, but all the chords will be different names.
All notes and chords will be transposed up a 4th from the guitar.
If you play the C chord shape on the guitar and play it on the guitalele it become an F chord. Notice a fourth up from C is F.
If you take the G chord shape on the guitar and play it on the guitarlele it becomes a C chord.
You will notice that the C chord on the guitarlele has the same foundation as the easy one finger C chord of the ukulele, but the C chord on the guitarlele will require three fingers because of the extra 2 strings.
