Since an electromagnet has an iron core, do an electromagnet and a permanent magnet always attract?

The interaction between two permanent magnets is generally well known: Unlike poles (N and S) attract and like poles (N and N or S and S) repel.

Does a permanent magnet have a similar interaction with an electromagnet?

An electromagnet is a coil of wire wound around an iron core (The presence of the core is not essential but it does significantly strengthen the magnetic field of the coil).

The magnetic poles of an electromagnet can be easily flipped by reversing the direction of the electric current through the coil.

Answer: The electromagnet behaves very similarly to a permanent magnet.
