Univision 19 Sacramento’s reporting for the Center for Health Journalism’s Ethnic Media Collaborative investigates how Mexican immigrants who speak indigenous languages are often overlooked or treated poorly by health care institutions. Reporter Andrea Igliozzi portrays the situation of Silvia Perez, of Zapotec origin, who was given medication to induce a miscarriage with no support or information in her language. After losing her baby, she plunged into a deep depression. Perez is not alone. Many other immigrants who speak indigenous languages suffer similar challenges. Igliozzi’s reporting was produced as part of the USC Center for Health Journalism Ethnic Media Collaborative’s Healing California yearlong initiative.
