Enabling Research with NLP-driven Cohort Discovery and Query Generation

Determining patients eligible for biomedical research is often challenging, typically involving manual chart review or database assistance. In this talk, Dr. Nic Dobbins will cover projects aimed at saving time and costs by enabling self-service applications for patient selection. The first, Leaf, uses a drag-and-drop abstract syntax tree approach for generating database queries. The next, LeafAI, employs a natural language interface to convert free-text criteria into queries using a hybrid large language model (LLM) and rule-based approach. His talk will conclude with a discussion of LeafAI’s chat-like interface for multi-hop biomedical reasoning, and future projects on LLM-driven semi-autonomous agents.
