In Gaza, hospitals are overwhelmed with patients and running out of medical supplies. They are forced to operate in inadequate conditions to save lives. Here, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) surgeon Dr. Obeid describes a recent amputation on a nine-year-old boy:

"We lack instruments, and we have a lot of cases, so we just amputated under slight sedation. You can see, this other guy, he’s the anesthetist. He is trying to keep the boy’s mouth open to prevent him from strangulation.  So, we amputate him in front of his mother and his sister, because there is no space, and the sister is waiting to be operated on next.
You cannot imagine this. This girl, this 13-year-old, waiting for an operation, looking at me, as I am amputating the mid-foot of her brother. But actually, this is the situation."

The total siege on Gaza has made running medical and humanitarian operations there extremely complicated. Some MSF staff, like Dr. Obeid, continue to support hospitals where they can. Read more at https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org...
