Rabbit Awareness Week 2023 is here! And this year it’s all about neutering.
While getting your rabbits neutered may bring a lot of worry to us bun-parents, it is a relatively safe, routine procedure which is performed by many vets on a daily basis. As with any operation, there are always some risks (just like there are when we humans have an operation) but your rabbit-savvy vet will always discuss everything with you before you go ahead with the operation.

Healthy rabbits can usually be neutered from 16 weeks of age at a minimum weight of 1kg, but it’s always best to take advice from your vet as some may neuter earlier, while others may neuter a little later.
Neutering a male rabbit is called Castration and during the procedure, the testicles will be removed, and for neutering a female rabbit it is called spaying, where during the operation both the ovaries and womb are removed.

Here are many of the advantages of neutering your rabbits:

🐰 Longer life expectancy
Unneutered male rabbits are at risk of developing testicular cancer and 80% of unneutered female rabbits are at risk of developing uterine cancer by the age of 5. Neutering your rabbits will reduce/eliminate the risk of this.

🐰 Prevents accidental pregnancies
Female rabbits can become pregnant from as young as 4 months old, so it’s always best to separate an un-neutered pair/group before this age to prevent any unwanted litters. Unspayed females can also have repeated phantom pregnancies which can cause stress and hormonal/aggressive behaviours.

🐰 Helps with litter training & reduces aggressive/territorial behaviours
Unneutered male and female rabbits are more likely to spray urine and leave a trail of poops to mark their territory. This reduces after neutering and makes litter training much easier.
Neutering your rabbits will also reduce any aggressive behaviours.

🐰 Companionship
Rabbits are social animals that need the company of their own species. Neutering your rabbits not only prevents any unwanted pregnancies as mentioned above, but it is vital before starting the bonding process.
