African swine fever broke out on a pig farm. All the pigs and pigs were culled. Only the piglets were isolated from the farm. After the outbreak was over, the pigs were returned to their pens. The pigs that survived the African swine fever grew very quickly and were sold to the market.
The pigs that survived were left as sows, which may have been infected with African swine fever and therefore could not give birth. The infected survivors needed to be culled to raise a new generation of healthier sows.
