Victoria has denied a Melbourne mother and her daughter an exemption to quarantine at home after returning from the United States where the five-year-old girl was receiving vital cancer treatment.

Sammy Colakidis is in remission after beating cancer, however, doctors warn she is at high risk of relapsing and requires ongoing treatment at a North Carolina clinic.

Kristy Colakidis told Sky News they have gone through hotel quarantine twice and each time nurses were unable to support her daughter.

The family’s application to quarantine at home so Sammy could have access to her regular doctors was rejected.

“Unfortunately, NSW and Victoria government’s have not cared about any of the emotional wellness of the child,” Ms Colakidis said.

“Even myself, crying on the phone as a desperate mother begging for help, it’s literally fallen on deaf ears.”

Shadow Vic Health Minister Georgie Crozier said the rejection was a “hard, callous message” from the department.

“I hope the government does actually take this case on and I hope that some common sense prevails,” Ms Crozier said.
