Making history a fantasy is dangerous. What happens when you start to make a "realistic" Anne Shirley and you do your homework? What happens when you don't? #historicalcostuming #edwardianfashion #nocostumewithoutcontext

I've been working on this for several weeks, but far too much has happened lately for me to save it till next week. If you like to think of a fantasy where there is no violent history, are you ignoring it? Are you denying it? Are you just trying to leave the room so you don't have to face it? When people in the community choose to ignore certain aspects of history they end up making tone deaf choices that hurt the costuming community. They end up hurting BIPOC, SWANA, AAPI, and other marginalized creators.

Even if you're not in it for the history, even if you just want to do it for "fun". You could still make some terrible mistakes. Possibly even moreso.

Since there were barely any mentions of the Mi'kmaq people in any of the Anne books, please consider supporting them, especially at this time, as they watch us all finally accept the trauma of residential schools:
