Interactive read aloud—Advice and suggestions for making this activity high-level and engaging

Before

introduce the book—explore genre, title, and author

make predictions—model first then have students offer predictions by previewing the text together

clarify concepts e.g. anything historical or abstract

set a purpose for reading: "Let's read to find out ..."

During

expressive reading, underline with your voice

read slowly, pause, go with the author's style

ask open-ended questions, "What are we thinking so far?" avoid yes/no questions.

invite personal response

don't overdo questions

After

ask what students thought of the story

ask higher level questions that require students to revisit the text

students can retell the story to one another with structured retelling or a checklist

focus on key themes of the story for discussion
