In other news.
A new tissue adhesive has been developed, made from the same substance as dermal fillers used in cosmetic procedures.
It has yielded positive results from animal testing, and is expected to help speed up recovery for patients with serious injuries.
Lee Eun-jin has the details.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in human skin.
It is also one of the most common compounds used in dermal fillers for cosmetic procedures.
Now, a team of Korean researchers have used this, to create a new composite filler that has excellent biocompatibility and induces tissue regeneration.

This rat has a severe leg muscle injury.
It cannot move on its own.
The new tissue adhesive substance is injected, and in just 3 days,
the rat has recovered to the point where it can slowly walk on its own.

"It immediately connects torn nerves or muscles, which speeds up rehabilitation towards walking."

The secret to such a quick recovery is in the gold nano-particles.
These particles fit along the torn tissues and deliver electrical signals needed for movement.
Gold has great conductivity, and is not susceptible to chemical reactions in the body, which means there is a lower risk of side effects.
And the adhesive element keeps the damaged tissues in place, making recovery quicker.

"Paired with a robot to assist rehabilitation, even severely damaged muscles can regain their function instantly."

This research has been published in the science journal Nature,

and as the research team now prepare for clinical trials,
they are also doing further research to apply the latest discovery to damaged organs.
