Kidney transplantation
A surgery to place a healthy kidney into a person with kidney failure
Procedure
The blood vessels of the kidney are sealed with a stapler or clipping device
The kidney’s attachments to the ureter, liver, spleen, and adrenal gland are also removed.
The entire kidney is removed in a plastic bag.
Incisions are closed with sutures.
A long incision is made into the lower abdomen on one side.
The donor kidney is placed into the lower belly.
The renal artery vein of the donor kidney is sewn to the external iliac artery and vein.
The donor ureter is connected to the bladder.
The incision is closed with sutures.
A drain may be placed in the incision site to reduce swelling.
Post- Operative Care
You may spends up to a week in the hospital
Temporary dialysis may be required
Regular checkups with blood tests/ x- rays as advised
Recovery period is about 6 months
Take medications as prescribed
