It was a wonderful experience that we were able to visit this Kaamatan festival in 2023. Kaamatan is an important event in East Malaysia (Sabah). A harvest festival known as Tadau Kaamatan by the locals is celebrated annually by many ethnic groups of Sabah, mainly the Kadazandusun (the largest indigenous ethnic group in Sabah), Murut and Rungus people. It is a festival of thanksgiving held by farmers to thank the rice spirit, Bambaazon, and Kinoingan (God) for the bountiful harvest. The Month of the Kaamatan Festival begins on the 1st of May. This grand celebration is officially celebrated on May 30-31 each year at the KDCA Cultural Unity Centre and is declared a public holiday. It also aims to maintain goodwill and friendship among the people.
What is the legend of Kaamatan?
According to legend, this is to give thanks to their god, Kinoingan, for sacrificing his daughter, Huminodun, by cutting her to pieces and spread it across the field which then produced a fruitful harvest of the paddy.
Sabah is situated in the northern part of Borneo Island. One fun fact about Sabah is the well-known Borneo Island, the only island governed by three countries: Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.
