Operation Gunnerside was the British Army operation to stop Hitler from achieving atomic bomb. After the tragic failure of C.O. OPERATION FRESHMAN, an S.O.E. party GUNNERSIDE was immediately mobilized to destroy the high priority product of the Norsk Hydro Works at VEMORK. Three months after the first attempt, six more Norwegians were sent to Rjukan for Operation Gunnerside. Led by Joachim Rønneberg, the group jumped from a plane under the cover of snowfall at around midnight on February 16, 1943. Operation Gunnerside successfully destroyed the Vemork heavy water production facility and supplies. The raid caused the Germans to lose about 500 kg of heavy water and decommissioned the plant for a few months.
