The word Jhang is derived from the Sanskrit word jāṅgala which means rough or forested terrain; the word Jungle also shares the same root.

In 1604 during the era of Nawab Ghazi Khan Sial he defeated Balochs at the bank of Chenab river and was given control of that area where he formed "Mighiana" town just 5 Kms away from main city Jhang. Later both the cities were combined under a single municipality known as Jhang-Maghiana by the British
