India has said it would expand maritime security cooperation with Vietnam amid China’s belligerence in the South China Sea and ambitions in the Bay of Bengal. The two sides also agreed to further strengthen bilateral strategic cooperation in defence and oil and gas sectors as President Ram Nath Kovind held productive and extensive talks with his counterpart on Tuesday. This was President Kovind’s first visit to South-East Asia and to the ASEAN region as the president. The two leaders reiterated the importance of building a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region on the basis of respect for national sovereignty and international law. After conclusing his visit to Vietnam, the President left on a four-day Australia tour from November 21, in the first ever state visit by an Indian president to the country.
