Smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulation of an extruder with a conventional screw design having a 38 mm diameter. The simulation is conducted with 250,000 particles at a screw speed of 120 RPM. The simulated time is 10 s in 0.005 s steps, and took one hour to conduct with an Nvidia CUDA GPU with 1024 processors.

The color represents pressure as the material is processed from the hopper to the die. It is a concept model only and should not be considered accurate since it does not (yet) model the transient temperature or non-Newtonian material behavior.

The simulation was developed to support research in screw design to enable single pellet extrusion.
