PEX stands for Polyethylene cross
PEX stands for Polyethylene cross - linked. It’s a strong, flexible and inexpensive alternative to copper pipe.
There are three main classifications for PEX tubing: PEX-A, PEX-B, and PEX-C. These classifications refer to the various methods that manufacturers use for cross-linking the polyethylene molecules.
All three types of PEX have the same dimensions and work with the same fittings, with the exception of expansion-style fittings, which generally only work with PEX-A. PEX-A, –B, and –C tubing is available from a variety of manufacturers for use in plumbing and heating applications. Heating PEX contains an oxygen barrier to prevent corrosion of ferrous metals in closed-loop hydronic heating systems.
Carrying the first classification, PEX-A is created using the Engel Method. Cross-linking takes place while the polyethylene is melted, resulting in even cross-links throughout the tubing. This method gives PEX-A more flexibility, added burst resistance, and the unique ability to recover from kinks through the application of a heat gun. It’s also the only tubing compatible with expansion-style fittings.
PEX-B is created using the Silane Method, where cross-linking occurs in solid-state tubing after extrusion, making PEX-B more rigid than PEX-A.
PEX-C is made from the Irradiation Method. Beams of electrons cross-link polyethylene after it’s been shaped into tubing. PEX-C and PEX-B are generally interchangeable and usually cost less than PEX-A.
PEX-Aluminum-PEX, or PEX-AL-PEX, contains an aluminum layer for added rigidity and uses a unique set of fittings. The aluminum layer doubles as an oxygen barrier. Most PEX-AL-PEX only carries approval for use in heating applications.
