Depression is a mental illness
Depression is a mental illness characterised by dysphoria or anhedonia plus a bunch of other symptoms affecting concentration, sleep, mood and general level of functioning. When depression is severe (usually measured by how much functional impact it has) it can develop psychotic features. Things like hallucinations and delusions.
It is treated with psychotherapy, an antidepressant medicine and sometimes we add a dopamine antagonist (antipsychotic) or perform ECT.
