here's a slice of swissness
here's a slice of swissness for you: i came across these boys and their rendition of 'ewigi liäbi' by chance on swiss tv around christmas/new year 2007/08, and my life hasn't quite been the same ever since...
i wanted to make a video of this song, but because that wasn't really practical at the time, i opted for a little animation instead. it's my first attempt at this type of thing, so if it's not quite up there with your average aardman or pixar, then that may have a whole lot to do with it...
still, whether you like the video or not, i hope you'll like the music: what they're singing is in fact a pop song by the swiss group mash, but they've completely made it their own and put it into the genre of the 'naturjuitz', which is a bit difficult to translate, but, as i understand it, is the unadulterated a cappella alp jodel and harmony style that gives it this direct, heartfelt and honest quality that you hear in their voices.

incidentally, the language they're singing in is the swiss german nidwalden dialect, and unless you are swiss you're unlikely to understand very much of it, so i've supplied an unofficial translation, which isn't the most poetic, i know, but it more or less scans and gives you an idea of what it's all about. (not surprisingly, it's all about love...)
