We all have unique sensory needs and most of us, our children included, are a mix of sensory seeking and sensory avoiding.
.
Many children seek out vestibular and or proprioceptive input 🤸‍♀️
These same sensory seeking children may avoid tactile, visual, or auditory input 🚫
Many children are the opposite of the above description 🤗
.
The trick is to identify your child's sensory seeking needs 👉 what types of sensory activities do they actively seek more of 👈 and incorporate those types of activities into the daily routine as a proactive approach for regulation.
.
Then identify your child's sensory avoiding tendencies 👉 what types of sensory input do they avoid or become fearful of 👈 and use strategies around those types of activities.
.
For example, if your child tends to avoid tactile activities and dislikes getting messy, use calming proprioception before and during any type of tactile activity.
👉 Heavy work
👉 Massage
👉 Deep pressure with a weighted lap pad or vest
👉 Calming music
.
