Welcome back to Film Tremble. The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai actor Ralph Macchio believe that a once-pitched crossover between The Karate Kid and Rocky would have worked in today's industry. Macchio's work on The Karate Kid as Daniel LaRusso lead to two sequels and a starring role in the recent television sequel Cobra Kai. The 1984 action/drama film was heavily based on the underdog troupe and is an inspiration for many similar movies and television shows today. Both series also have a shared history as director John G. Avildsen directed Rocky, Rocky V, and the three original Karate Kid movies.
The Karate Kid is a classic underdog story that follows Daniel, the new kid in town who is constantly being bullied by Johnny Lawrence and his group of friends who study karate at the nearby Cobra Kai dojo. When Daniel befriends and begins to work with the unassuming Mr. Miyagi, later revealed to be a martial arts master, he gains the strength and courage to take on his bullies from Cobra Kai. The two sequels of this hit film follow a similar premise, with Mr. Miyagi continuing to train Daniel as he deals with other bullies and enemies through his learned skills. The sequel television show Cobra Kai was released in 2018 and follows Johnny almost 35 years after being defeated by Daniel as their rivalry is renewed again. Macchio explained in a UPROXX interview the premise behind the pitched The Karate Kid and Rocky crossover movie that was never made, saying that the writers were ahead of their time based on what he's seen in the current movie industry. Macchio believes that this crossover premise was both original and would have worked well. With both Rocky and Karate Kid characters back in the public eye, Macchio knows that there is interest in "seeing more of these characters."
