From certain unpredicted events come unexpected opportunities and priceless value.
On 16 March 2020, with Covid chasing the world’s heels, we shut down all our seven yoga centres in Gurgaon.
It was unpredicted, and it was heartbreaking to bring to an end 16 years of hard work, growing a wonderful community of yoga practitioners, and transforming this city into a kind of yoga capital of India.
Four days of deliberations and looking at options, and having the never-say-die attitude of yoga warriors, a small team of determined staff and teachers of SYCG launched our free daily offering of yoga classes, on YouTube.
The team had no digital experience, none of us had ventured out into YouTube in this manner before. We were at best amateurs. And we did not understand technology.
The rest, as they say, made history.
From a big, city led operation, suddenly we went on to a gigantic worldwide audience trapped indoors because of a dreaded virus. We let people know that the same Gurgaon yoga programme was now available twice a day, free, to anyone across India, and across the world. What was more, was the idea that people could practice to a recorded version of the live class, at their own time and comfort.
Yoga friends, practitioners and well-wishers joined. And till today, four years on, they continue to use the channel extensively for their practice.
From 20 March 2020, we have had our students join us live on YouTube , and in May of that year, to our live Zoom open classes.
We mark the 4th anniversary of the forced transformation, from being onsite, to being online. More than 5,00,000 people around the world have done yoga with us, every day since we started our YouTube and Zoom classes.
