The UP Concert Chorus, fresh from their winning the Grand Prize of the 6th International Krakow Choir Festival in Poland last July 2015, where they were the only Asian choir among 24 choirs from 10 countries, sang “Kruhay”, a Benny Fruto Castillon composition at TEDxDiliman last October 11, 2015. “Kruhay” is Kinaray-a for “Welcome”. Kinaray-a is a language spoken in the island of Panay in the Visayas. The song narrates the festive arrival of the Bornean Datus in what is now known as the province of Antique. They brought the sadok (a wide-brimmed hat or salakot) and the kulintas (necklace) made of gold which they bartered with the local Ati, a negrito ethnic group in the Visayas. This song is accompanied by the traditional ethnic musical instruments kiling-kiling (finger bells) and tultog (bamboo percussion). The UP Concert Chorus, UPCC, or simply Korus, is the official choir of the University of the Philippines. As an internationally-competitive performing group, Korus has perfected versatility in singing classical, folk, pop and Broadway musical genres with signature vibrant choreography. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
