MEHTER HISTORY
Mehter, the oldest military band in the world, is first seen in the Orkhon Inscriptions.
The military band, described as "Kübürge" and "Tuğ" in these inscriptions, dates back to the 11th century.
In Divan-ü Lügat-it Türk, written in the 16th century, it is stated that he made music in the presence of the Khans.
At that time, it was composed of instruments called küvrük (kös), tomruk (drum), çenk (cymbal) and nay-i türki.
“Tugs” made music during wars and special occasions.
In addition, "Tuğ" has become the symbol of sovereignty in the Turks.
So much so that Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, was given the title of Anatolian Seljuk Ruler II.
Gıyaseddin Mes'ud gave his principality authority by sending tuğs, standards, pipes, cymbals and drums.
In other words, the mehter is as old as the foundation of the Ottoman Empire.
Later, Mehter was closed down with changes in the instruments it included.
It continued its development until 1826.
The revival of the world's first military band dates back to 1914.
After this date, it has been kept alive in Republican Turkey until today.
In addition to the military face of the Mehter, the Ministry of Culture
He founded the Mehter section of our Group in 1992, in order to present the side of the group called "Esnaf Mehteri", which performs civilian music, and to include a wide repertoire.
In this way, he ensured that mehter music was revived in all its aspects and encouraged its promotion all over the world.
Our group, with its three-storey mehteri, has given hundreds of concerts in Istanbul and many other cities at home and abroad in countries such as Japan, Germany and Portugal.
In these concerts, he performed both the classical mehter repertoire, within the responsibility of his historical, cultural and artistic duty, and made joint programs with jazz and symphonic orchestras, being open to innovations.
