15 species of squirrels are found in India

Asian Red Cheeked Squirrel is diurnal and partly arboreal squirrel, being most active from ground level to about four feet up, in thick shrub layer vegetation.

Black Giant Squirrels are one of the largest species of squirrel in the world weighing around 1–1.25 kilograms found in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and North East of India. They are distinctly bicoloured with dark upperparts and pale underparts.

Five Striped Palm Squirrel is also known as northern palm squirrel found in Andaman & Nicobar Islands and North and West of India. They have five white stripes, three of which run from head to tail. The two outer stripes run only from forelegs to hind legs.

Grizzled Giant Squirrel have small rounded ears with pointed tufts found in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and South India. They have white flecks of hair cover over their greyish-brown bodies, giving them a grizzled look.

Himalayan Striped Squirrel are vividly striped small-sized squirrel found in the Himalayas and Sikkim. They are often seen in small groups and uses tree holes for shelter. Upper side has alternate light and dark stripes and tips of the ear pinnae bear small white tufts.

Indian Giant Squirrels are one of the largest squirrels in the world weighing 1.5–2 kg. Their upper parts and basal half of the tail are rich reddish-maroon.

Indian Palm Squirrel also known as the three-striped palm squirrel is found in the entire Indian Subcontinent. They are grizzled and grey-brown colour with three white stripes on upperparts. Two outer stripes run from forelegs to hind legs only.

Irrawaddy Squirrel also known as hoary-bellied Himalayan squirrel is found in Sikkim, West Bengal and North East of India. They are brown in color with pale grey or white belly found up to 1500m above sea level.

Jungle Palm Squirrel is a blackish-brown, bushy tailed squirrel common in tea plantations and confined to forests with tall trees within the West Indian Coast.  

Layard’s Squirrel also known as flame-striped jungle squirrel is found in Tamil Nadu. They are blackish brown with three stripes; the central stripe is broadest and longest with an orange or yellow hue.

Malabar Giant Squirrel is a sub-species of the Indian Giant Squirrel found in Kerala, Karnataka and the Western Ghats. They are a three-tone giant squirrel with varying shades of orange, maroon and purple.

Nilgiri Palm Squirrel is smaller and duller in appearance than other palm squirrels. They are dark grizzled olive, tinged tawny brown above, with three pale lines alternating with four dark ones on the back and rump.

Orange Bellied Himalayan Squirrel is a medium sized forest squirrel found in the North East of India. They have dark rufous brown upperparts speckled with yellowish-brown, underparts are orange, varying from pale to rusty red.

Pallas’s Squirrel is brownish on the upper body with a more reddish tint on the belly, and often with some black on the tail.
