INDESEM - From the archives - A lecture by Herman Hertzberger When in 1985 one of the most important professors of the previous two decades, Aldo van Eyck, announced his retirement in Delft, his long-time friend and colleague Herman Hertzberger has the idea to organize a big event as a farewell present. This means that INDESEM is now reinitiated, with Hertzberger as an important mentor for the students organizing the event. In this lecture two years later, in 1987, Hertzberger discusses the main design topic for the week: a new townhall for the city centre of The Hague. What is INDESEM? INDESEM (International Design Seminar) is a biennale, founded by a group of students in 1964 and reinitiated in 1985 by Herman Hertzberger. For one full week, students from all over the world come together at the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the Delft University of Technology to engage in conversation with tutors, architects and theorists about the current and future position of the architect within our society. The programme of the INDESEM seminar week consists of lectures, excursions and workshops, all organized around a specific contemporary theme. The lecture by Herman Hertzberger was uploaded from the archives on the occasion of INDESEM '23, that took place from the 29th of May - 2nd of June 2023 in Delft.
