Antibiotics are medicines used to treat bacterial infections. They are also called Antibacterial agents. Many bacteria are developing resistance to antibiotics in this era. They are called "Super Bacteria" or "Super Bugs". Superbugs are a great threat for us. These bacteria may infect humans and animals, and the infections they cause are harder to treat than those caused by non-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic resistance leads to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and increased death rate.
These Superbacterias becomes resistant to commonly used antibiotics by producing enzymes that degrade the drug, by using efflux pumps or by genetic mutation. Resistant bacteria can further transmit the resistant genes present in their F-plasmid to other bacteria by a process called "Conjugation".
Antibiotic resistance is rising to dangerously high levels in all parts of the world. Many bacteria infections are becoming harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat as antibiotics become less effective.
Misuse of antibiotics by us is the major reason for its emergence. Antibiotic resistance among bacteria renders the antibiotic pipelines empty. They spread fast in the hospital and community.
