The elderly Mrs. Smith opens the door with a smile.  The officers of D - Company have a plaster and beam house to themselves.  Two of them go into the kitchen, one of them hits his head on the low door frame.  One unloads himself of his pack, already with a cigarette in his mouth.  An Elizabethan portrait.  They marvel at the interior decorations of the house, such as the interior corbels.  The Colonel and the Adjutant in the headquarters in the White Hart public house.  A picture of the Princess Pat's in Action at the battle of Ypres.
