if parallel light rays coming from infinity are focused on the retina this state of refraction is called emmetropia or normal eye.

if parallel light rays coming from infinity are focused behind  the retina this state of refraction is called hypermetropia.

if parallel light rays coming from infinity are focused in front of  the retina this state of refraction is called myopia.

if light rays do not focused on a single point but make different focal points called astigmatism.

if one focal point makes on the retina and other is behind the retina is called simple hyperopic astigmatism.

if one focal point makes on the retina and other is in front of the retina is called simple myopic astigmatism.

if both of the focal point makes behind the retina but at different positions  is called compound hyperopic astigmatism.

if both of the focal point makes in front of the retina but at different positions  is called compound myopic astigmatism.

if one focal point form in front of retina and one behind the retina is called mixed astigmatism.
