(12 Jul 1994) On Monday (11/7) thousands of Belorussians welcomed their
newly-elected president, the flamboyant populist Alexander
Lukashenko, back to his hometown of Shklov. Appearing for the
first time since his landslide victory in Sunday's (10/7) runoff
election, Lukashenko told the crowds in Shklov that that he wll
re-establish firm order in the country and fight crime and
corruption. He added that building a strong new economy is the
most important task ahead of him. Lukashenko, the chairman of
parliament's anti-mafia commission, trounced Prime Minister
Vyacheslav Kebich by 80 percent to 14 percent in Sunday's
election.
