Android TV Box Review: Mecool M8S Plus W - A 2018 Good Cheap Model

Android TV boxes are always fun to review. Their purpose – to use your huge TV as a screen with functions that your smartphone offers. And many of us use them as a media player. This time – a 2018 model for 30 bugs!
Mecool are present on the market for a couple of years already, and they are basing their fame on the M8s models. This particular one is called M8s Plus W. In short – for 30 bugs you get a stylish looking device with acceptable performance and hardware support for most of the current video codecs. This one is particularly important – hardware decoding of VP9 will result is smooth playback of Youtube videos, as this is the current standard that YouTube uses.
The retail box of the M8S Plus W may actually trick you that you’ve just bought something super-awesome. It somewhat reminds of the Xoami Mi Box 3’s international version. The standard accessories included – HDMI cable, power adapter, a nice remote, and the TVbox itself.
The device is powered by the S905W – the latest and the most power-efficient revision of this SOC by Amlogic. It also is the weakest from the 900 series. There are two variations – the cheaper is with 1GB RAM and 8GB flash, and the one with 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM is about 10 USD more.
The connectivity options are somewhat limited – you may count on 2 USB ports, the HDMI output and AV-out. No RJ45, no Bluetooth, no 5G Wi-Fi, no microSD slot.
The software is next. Out of the box – Android Nougat, with a few pre-installed apps – I need to underline – none of them is spyware or bloatware. The Google services framework is installed.
The big news about this TVbox is Netflix. Theoretically it is supposed to work in HD – something that very few android TV boxes are capable of. Long story short – it is about licensing, and most of the Chinese android TVboxes do not have the so called wWidevine L1 support. Apparently the latest builds of the Netflix app have the purpose of disabling HD playback on cheaper non-Google certified TVboxes like this one, and if you want the HD support, better get the 5.0.5 version.
My biggest challenge was to find how to uninstall the apps. The Android version is quite slim-lined, but it is not Android TV – it is pure Android apparently with some visual adjustments. My disappointment here was the lack of Bluetooth and the inability to enable a dongle, because the Bluetooth integration is simply missing from the ROM.
The few games I’ve played turned out to run good, no frames skipping, or at least it wasn’t that obvious. Reminding you that I had to use keyboard and mouse as I only have a Bluetooth controller.
Bottom line – the classic cliché “you get what you pay for” is the logo I’d stamp on that TV box. Unimpressive performance, which will satisfy you if you mostly watch movies, play music, listen to online radio and stay away from gaming and CPU-intensive apps. If you plan to run the box as a KODI box – it will do the job, pretty well.
