"The Manitou Incline is a scar on the side of a mountain in the Pike National Forest (near Colorado Springs, CO) over which a cable car used to operate, helping to carry materials for pipelines on Pike’s Peak. Once they finished, the cable car was decommissioned, and it was turned into an incredibly arduous hike that gains 2000 ft. of elevation within just one short mile. During the summer of 2019, I decided to hike the Incline while staying with my wife’s parents nearby; I had been biking and hiking quite a bit all summer so I thought it would be fun! Long story short, I failed to bring enough water (I did not realize just HOW dehydrated one can get in the direct sun at 6500ft), had a panic attack because my heart rate was very high (190 bpm) and would not come down, called 911, and a very kind fireman gave me one liter of saline, which enabled me to walk down on my own power. It was clearly just a bad case of dehydration, which I was silly not to prevent, but nevertheless I needed to recover. I spent three days thinking about it, and then decided I had to try again. I was infinitely wiser this time, bringing 3 liters of water and snacks. Even though I was prepared, I still had yet another panic attack about a third of the way up because of the harrowing memory, but I let it abate and calmly finished the hike without another event. I felt a dramatic sense of accomplishment that day and I wanted to bring awareness to the anxiety that can be debilitating to people at times. The piece is autobiographical and chronicles the experience just as I outlined above: I. a call to hike the mountain, followed by the excited/thoughtful journey to the Incline, and the failure; II. deep reflection about my own limits mentally and physically; and III. a second call to the mountain, the arduous journey, and an eventual conquering of one’s own fear."
