The Philippines has released footage of Chinese coastguard ships firing water cannons at close range at its supply vessels en route to a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

The incident over the weekend drew widespread international condemnation, including from the US and UK, over “dangerous” manoeuvres by the Chinese vessels that posed “serious risks to regional peace and stability.”

The Philippine ships had been on a mission to resupply an outpost at the Second Thomas Shoal, where troops have been stationed for decades onboard a rusting, grounded navy ship. The maritime feature is also claimed by China.

According to Philippine coast guard and diplomatic officials, six Chinese coast guard ships and two militia vessels blocked two navy-chartered civilian supply boats, hitting one with a powerful water cannon.

“The [Philippine] coastguard has recorded evidence of the Chinese Maritime Militia working in conjunction with the Chinese Coast Guard to obstruct the resupply boat’s passage towards Ayungin Shoal,” tweeted Commodore Jay Tarriela, alongside footage of the confrontation.
