SPAIN BACKGROUND TO THE EXECUTIONS
The Spanish embassy in Lisbon destroyed by fire; anti-Franco riots in Paris; sixteen ambassadors recalled from Madrid - this was the scale of European reaction to the execution of five urban guerrillas in Spain. In the past year, as hopes for a more democratic government in Spain have receded, extremist organisations have declared their own war on the regime of General Franco. Now 82 and ailing, the old Caudillo shows no sign of stepping down. Many observers fear that his inflexible attitudes will only beget more unrest, and that his regime might end as it began nearly 40 years ago - in violence and bloodshed.
