We have never tried with a four week old baby before as our successes have been with orphaned newborns but we have certainly learned a lot from this event. Found on the ground in a very dazed state at a flying-fox colony, Molly was rescued by Anita before being taken to Rachael along with a ittle baby that Anita had also just picked up. We discussed the pros and cons and decided that Rachael would carefully put the baby onto a heavily lactating Molly and see how it all went. Baby was in seventh heaven but Molly was pretty spaced out for a couple of days while she recouperated from her concussion. First there was a sense of detatchment but a relationship gradually developed between the pair and they are now inseparable. The milk bar dried up following rescue but Rachael support fed the baby for the first four or five days until Molly started producing milk once more. Any flying-fox by itself through the day is in trouble. Don’t touch but please call 0488 228 134 for Brisbane and surrounding districts or phone the nearest wildlife rescue organisation in your area.
