#The ends of the cut have an overhanging piece of single-stranded DNA. These are called “sticky ends” because they are able to form base pairs with any DNA molecule that contains the complementary sticky end
Sticky ends increase the efficiency of ligation.
After digestion of a DNA with certain Restriction enzymes, the ends left have one strand overhanging the other to form a short single-stranded segment. This overhang will easily re-attach to other ends like it, and are known as "Sticky ends".
