Check out the progress of our new stockade style log cabin! This is our 4th one in Alaska, but a new style!
Building an off grid cabin can be challenging. At this property all we had available to use was aspen, so that's what we used! It's an unconventional log to use for a log cabin, but by doing a stockade style we were able to use the aspen in 8 ft. lengths. This works out because that's about as much as you want to handle and also it's about the length you can find straight sections of aspen. As long as you have a good eave hangover and the logs are protected and sealed, they will do just as well as spruce or other timber. It was an interesting build and a LOT more work than a traditional log cabin. Our land is sloping so that made it difficult as well- hauling logs uphill is NOT FUN!

But- by using what we had we didn't have to purchase logs and many of the doors and windows came from the dump- score!

We still have a lot of finish work to do but the roof is on and we have a cabin!

We used it to 2-side our logs. Using aspen off the property for this build... new species and new style!
