Video Transcript:
The way that humans get infected is those who handle poultry farms, and because of their close
proximity to bird droppings as well as to other bird secretions. There is a likelihood that a human can
get affected.
There’s currently a scare regarding the avian flu, also called the bird flu or avian influenza.
This is not just an Indian phenomenon, this is a global phenomenon. In fact it started of not in India,
but countries outside India. The avian flu is currently in Denmark, in France, in UK as well as South
Korea. So Europe and Asia have been affected by the bird flu.
The bird flu originally starts off in wild birds, particularly in ducks and geese. And this is transmitted
through bird droppings, through nasal secretion, as well as through saliva.
It has been seen that poultry farms are getting affected by the bird flu. Because of the close
proximity of the birds, the virus transmits rapidly from one bird to another because it is easily
transmissible.
The current avian flu is been caused by the H5N8 strain. This is a type of Type A influenza virus.
Which affects poultry and wild birds. Commonly the H5N1 strain has been implicated in diseases.
The H5N8 strain is actually weaker and less lethal as compared to H5N1.
The H5N8 is rarely known to affect humans. No human cases have been reported till now.
It is safe to eat eggs and poultry, as long as they are well cooked. Fortunately, for us in India, we
cook our food well, in fact, we have a habit of over cooking our food. And in this instance, if you cook
your chicken and eggs well, they are safe for human consumption.
In that very rare instance where human transmissions happens, human to human transmission also
is fortunately, very very rare.
The symptoms of the avian flu are similar to normal flu, cough, fever, body ache, breathlessness and
sometimes a sore throat.
