Every year I create these elaborate Nativity scenes featuring Playmobil toys. Each of the Nativities are created around an overarching theme. This year's theme is about refugees. My Nativity shows The Holy Family's flight to Egypt. It also features various refugees fleeing their personal struggles. Syrians risking everything in their makeshift rafts. Inuits displaced as the ice caps melt. Poverty and violence force Guatemalans to leave their country.

The Christmas story is not only a story of the birth of Jesus, but also a refugee story - about a family forced to seek asylum in order to escape terrible, life- threatening violence. Matthew ( 2:13- 14) recalls that after the birth of Jesus, his family was forced to flee to a foreign country where people spoke a different language and practiced a different religion. They were forced to flee without knowing if they would be offered hospitality and shelter or if they would face further rejection and violence. They only had their faith in God and the hope that the people of Egypt could provide them with security and shelter.

The war in Syria had been going on for more than four years when Alan Kurdi’s parents lifted the 3-year-old boy and his 5-year-old brother into an inflatable boat and set off from the Turkish coast for the Greek island of Kos, just three miles away.
